College of Basic and Applied Sciences

The College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS) is where foundational science drives innovation and prepares students to lead in high-impact industries.

Our college brings together Biology, Chemistry, and Physics; Mathematics and Computer Science; and applied, industry-focused programs in Aerospace, Agriculture, Concrete Industry Management, Engineering Technology, Geosciences, and Military Science. This powerful combination of disciplines equips students to move from theory to application, from classroom learning to research labs, field experiences, and industry environments.

As the largest of the university’s five undergraduate colleges by declared majors, CBAS serves more than 5,300 undergraduate students, over 300 master’s students, and 90 doctoral candidates. We offer 20 undergraduate majors with 60 emphasis areas, 10 master’s programs, and three doctoral degrees in Computational Science, Molecular Biosciences, and Mathematics and Science Education.

CBAS is advancing leadership in quantum science and technology through interdisciplinary collaboration across physics, mathematics, computer science, and computational science. Our faculty and students are engaged in research that supports national priorities in quantum computing, advanced materials, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies, positioning graduates to contribute to the rapidly expanding quantum workforce.

Public-private partnerships are central to our mission. CBAS works closely with industry leaders, government agencies, and research institutions to align academic programs with real-world workforce needs. These partnerships create pathways for internships, applied research, workforce training, and technology transfer, while accelerating innovation that fuels regional and national economic growth.

Through hands-on research, experiential learning, and strategic industry collaboration, our students graduate prepared to meet the demands of aerospace, advanced manufacturing, agriculture, data science, research laboratories, defense, and other high-growth sectors.

Our 220 full-time faculty members serve as mentors, innovators, and collaborators who are advancing discovery while building the scientific and technological workforce of tomorrow.
